After rains, mercury set to rise back to April peaks again
Nagpur: Rain and thunderstorms over the last two days brought down temperatures across the region. It will become warmer hereafter, with dry weather expected for most of next week as per the predictions of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
Only three days after Nagpur experienced the season’s highest temperature of 43.6 degrees Celsius, the temperatures in the city fell five degrees.

The minimum temperature of the city has fallen by six degrees between Friday and Wednesday. Through Wednesday night, Nagpur received 2.2mm rainfall, taking the month’s total rainfall in the first week to 3mm. Gondia and Yavatmal also received small amounts of rainfall on the day.
“Some more rains and clouds are expected on Friday. A trough is running through Central India, which is moving towards the south, and its effects will fade afterwards. Over the next five days, the temperature of the city is expected to rise steeply. In fact, maximum temperatures are expected to go back to 43 degrees Celsius by Monday,” said an official from the regional meteorological centre of IMD. He added that cloud cover over the region will fade over the next two days with temperatures in Nagpur in the range of 41 and 23 degrees on the Celsius scale.
The official also said that usually Nagpur’s temperature goes up to 45 degrees Celsius towards the end of April. “It is likely that the maximum temperatures will hover around the 43 degrees mark over the next two weeks,” he added. During the first week of April, the mean maximum temperature of Nagpur is around 39 degrees Celsius. This year’s mean maximum temperature for the first week of the month was 41.3 degrees Celsius.
On Thursday, Nagpur’s maximum temperature was normal at 39.3 degrees Celsius. This was four degrees lesser than Sunday’s maximum temperature of 43.6 degrees Celsius, which was five degrees above normal.
The highest maximum temperature of Vidarbha on the day was Akola’s 41.1 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature was 35.6 degrees Celsius observed at Washim. The minimum temperature of Chandrapur for the day (27.2 degrees Celsius) was the region’s highest while the lowest was Gondia’s 21.4 degrees Celsius.
Very light to moderate rainfall occurred at isolated places over Vidarbha on Wednesday night. Thunderstorms were also observed at several places across Central India. Maximum as well as minimum temperatures were above normal at most places in the region.
