Chandrapur: Health authorities in Chandrapur district have suspended registration of Bramhapuri's prominent Christanand Hospital and sealed its operation theatre and inpatient department after allegations that post-cataract surgery infections left at least three patients with severe vision loss.The action was taken on Monday by civil surgeon Dr Mahadev Chinchole following a preliminary inquiry that revealed multiple violations of the Bombay Nursing Home Act, 1949, and major lapses in ophthalmic care standards atthe hospital.Christanand Hospital has long served economically weaker sections. However, complaints lodged last month triggered alarm after patients who underwent cataract surgeries in February reportedly developed infections, leading to permanent damage to their eyesight.According to health officials, a specially constituted investigation committee found that the hospital was conducting eye surgeries without authorised ophthalmology beds and had failed to comply with mandatory norms . "The surgeries on affected patients were conducted on February 19, while formal complaints were received on March 16. Preliminary findings indicate serious irregularities and violations. Accordingly, the hospital's registration has been suspended, and its operation theatre and inpatient department sealed until further orders," Dr Chinchole said.The matter has also been referred to state health department, which may initiate a higher-level probe depending on the final findings.While the hospital's surgical and inpatient services remain suspended, its outpatient department will continue to operate temporarily.Christanand Hospital administrator said health authorities have sealed the hospital's operation theatre and suspended hospital registration. "We have temporarily halted inpatient admissions in compliance with the directive," he said, expressing confidence that services would resume soon. Emphasising the hospital's cooperation with the inquiry, he said the administration is hopeful of clearing all the allegations.
