Literature inspires, empowers individuals: Academician

Mysuru: Academician Gururaj Karajagi on Sunday stated that literature is not merely a source of entertainment but a life force that inspires every individual and empowers them to face the challenges of the world."Literature forms the foundation of human existence," he said.
He was speaking after inaugurating the 7th edition of Mysuru Literary Fest–2026 at the Maharaja's College Centenary Hall here. The event was organised by the Mysore Literary Association."Literature inspires the search for eternal truths and elevates human beings to the peaks of awareness," he noted.Recalling his reading journey, Karajagi said that as children, they eagerly waited for ‘Chandamama', a Kannada magazine, and were fascinated by Panchatantra stories. Later, humour books attracted them. Over time, his reading turned towards serious literature. "Literature intellectually matures every individual. It nurtures wisdom and critical thinking," he said.Describing literary festivals as a mirror of society, he observed that for the people of Mysuru, literature is not merely an ornament but a way of life. "It is believed that culture purifies life and celebrates art and culture through festivals. Literature is an unparalleled metaphor of civilisation. Literary festivals reflect the character of a civilised society," he said.Referring to the digital era, he said that new technologies, including artificial intelligence, are emerging rapidly. "At such a time, we must reflect on how to preserve reading habits and creativity. We need to consciously cultivate an interest in reading and writing," he added.Former VC KC Belliappa, who is the president of the Mysore Literary Association, and secretary Reginald Wesley were present.
