DC directs strict action in SC/ST atrocity cases
Mandya: DC Kumara directed officials to take stringent action in cases related to atrocities against Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST).At a review meeting at the DC office on the implementation of welfare schemes and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, he stressed that such cases must be handled with utmost seriousness and urgency. He said those found guilty should face strict legal consequences as per the law. He also instructed officials to ensure that compensation, rehabilitation support and other facilities for victims are disbursed promptly, without procedural delays.
Emphasising the need for effective grassroots implementation, the DC mandated that vigilance and monitoring committee meetings be held regularly at the sub-divisional level. He said grievances should, as far as possible, be addressed at the place of occurrence to ensure timely justice and instil confidence among affected communities. Officials were told to submit comprehensive reports to the district administration on actions taken and outcomes of grievance redressal meetings.To strengthen awareness and legal literacy, Kumara called for taluk-level programmes to educate the public on the safeguards and rights guaranteed under the SC/ST Act. He underscored the importance of community participation in preventing atrocities and promoting social harmony.He directed the deputy director of social welfare department to issue identity cards to all vigilance committee members and ensure prior notice of meetings for full attendance. Senior district officials and vigilance committee members attended the meeting.
