MYSURU/MANGALURU: Condemning Pejawar pontiff
Vishwesha Theertha
’s alleged remarks against the Constitution, writers and activists staged a demonstration against the seer on the concluding day of the 83rd Akhila Bharata Kannada
Sahitya Sammelana
here on Sunday.
“The seer has insulted BR Ambedkar. He has demanded that the Constitution be amended; this is a direct attack on the statute,” a protester said. A day after the storm broke out over his statement on the Constitution, the pontiff claimed that his statement during the Dharma Sansad in
Udupi
was misinterpreted and denied insulting the statute.
Seer is now unquestionable, says Champa
“I want the benefits and privileges given to Dalits and minorities be extended to majority communities too. I asked the central government if it could make amendments to the Constitution on this,” the seer added.
Sahitya sammelana president
Chandrashekar Patil
said: “The religious leader has become an unquestionable seer. He will be removed from the mutt if he doesn’t speak like this… We should stop reacting to his statements.”
Activists in
Mysuru
also expressed apprehensions about incidents of intolerance in India. “They talk about protecting the cow, but are silent about rationalists and thinkers being killed,” the protesters said, slamming right-wing forces and fundamentalists. “We are not against Hinduism propagated by
Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and
Swami Vivekananda, but against principles dividing people. Fascist forces are targeting freedom of expression,” they said.
