MADIKERI: Thieves broke open the donation boxes at three temples in Talacauvery near here on Thursday night. The incident came to light on Friday morning when priests opened the temple doors. Temple executive officer Sampathkumar said the thieves targeted Cauvery, Ganapathy and Agastyeshwara temples. Perhaps power outage in the region worked in their favour. Hundi is cleared every month and last year, it had a collection of over Rs 1 lakh, he said.
DySP J D Prakash rushed to the spot along with fingerprint experts. However, the evidence was erased as it had rained heavily, crossing the nine inch mark. Prakash said the two security guards had gone home around 9 pm. He said the thieves had emptied the hundis and thrown them at the entrance of Brahmagiri Hills. The hinges of the boxes were broken.
Prakash said the boxes were unprotected and kept in the open. He said two police personnel will be posted at the temples.
