PUNE: In a bizarre accident two senior citizens, identified as Madhav Kapadi (65) and Sharad Joshi (65), both of Titwala in Thane district, were charred to death inside a car. The car, which was being towed away, met with an accident and caught fire. The incident took place on the Mumbai-Pune highway near Adoshi tunnel around 11.30 pm on Tuesday.
According to inspector Vijay Jadhav of Khopoli police station, on Tuesday afternoon Kapadi and Joshi had gone to Nigdi for some work.
While returning, their car broke down in the Khandala Ghat area. "They contacted their relatives and asked for another car," Jadhav said.
Their relatives sent one
Pravin Patel with another car. "Kapadi and Joshi's car was towed by tying it to Patel's car with the help of a nylon rope. Kapadi and Joshi were sitting in their car, with one of them behind the wheels to control the vehicle," Jadhav said.
After crossing the Adoshi tunnel on the Mumbai-Pune express highway, Patel took a turn and drove towards the old Pune-Mumbai highway. "However, the nylon rope, which was connecting the two cars snapped. As there was sharp slope on the road, Kapadi and Joshi could not control the motion of their vehicle and it dashed against the railings of the highway and overturned and caught fire," Jadhav said.
Kapadi and Joshi were stuck inside the car. "The police and the officials from the highway safety patrol rushed to the spot," Jadhav said, adding, "By the time we reached the spot, both of them were charred to death." The police doused off the flames and removed the bodies from the car and sent them for post mortem, Jadhav added. The Khopoli police have also registered a case of accidental death.
