MUMBAI: The number of illegal Bangladeshi migrants to Mumbai has nearly doubled between 2011 and 2012, from 880 to 1,600.
The intelligence branch has stumbled upon huge unlawful transactions to Bangladesh. The police found that a tout, Kabir Rabiul Islam, had in the last one year helped over two dozen Bangladeshis cross into the country. Joint commissioner of police (law and order) Sadanand Date has transferred the case to EOW.

The intelligence branch has arrested Kabir who migrated Bangladeshis to Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane and charged them. Last week, the branch raided Fancy hotel and bar at P D Mello Road in Masjid Bunder and nabbed five migrants working as waiters-Munir Haq, Rahul Malthy alias Shaikh, Nazmul Islam, Parvez Shaikh and Mohammed Vishwas. Police recovered Adhar cards, PAN cards and driving licences from two of the accused.
The accused told police that Kabir brought them her at the behest of hotel owner Santosh Shetty. They had used the hotel's electricity bills and address as proof for the documents.
"During the scrutiny of Kabir's SBI (Fort branch) accounts, we found that in the last one year, he had transferred Rs 48 lakh to an account belonging to one Arpita Biswas in Bangladesh. We have intimated the ED, I-T and the ATS," said a senior IPS officer, requesting anonymity.
"Shetty and hotel manager Bala Pujari knew they were Bangladeshis," said J Shaikh, intelligence branch officer.
