Thief in police custody escapes from washroom window of Kamothe police stn, nabbed after 6 hrs
Navi Mumbai: A 24-year-old man arrested by Kamothe police for bike theft from the parking near near Khandeshwar railway station had escaped from the police station through the washroom window after pretending to relieve himself on Sunday around 4.20 pm. However, the police team desperately launched a search operation and apprehended him after six hours by tracing him to his residence in Wadala (W), Mumbai. Accordingly, yet another FIR under BNS section was registered against him for the offence of intentional resistance, obstruction or escape from lawful custody.
API Yashwant Patil of Kamothe informed that, the accused Chetan Chandrakant Kaatkar, a resident of Ganesh Nagar chawl in Wadala (W) was arrested on May 29 in the FIR of vehicle theft registered on May 26. Kaatkar had stolen a parked bike near Khandeshwar railway station, when the bike owner, a Khanda colony resident Nihar Pal (23), who works for an IT company in CBD-Belapur, has parked the bike and went to work by train. After he returned from work and reached the railway station around 8pm , he found his bike stolen. From the CCTV surveillance, the accused Kaatkar was arrested from Wadala and the stolen bike was recovered.
API Patil said, “Kaatkar was in police custody remanded and locked at Kamothe police station.On Sunday around 4.30 pm, he pretended to visit washroom and a constable guarded outside the washroom. However, Kaatkar removed the horizontal glass panes of the toilet window and pushed the iron grille frame which was rusty and old and hence the it came off. As Kaatkar was slim, he easily escaped through the small window. But, the constable on guard outside the toilet heard the loud noise and ran behind the police station to reach the bathroom window, when Kaatkar was seen running away. The constable chased him, but he jumped over the compound wall of a building and escaped.”
API Patil added, “From CCTV camera surveillance, Kaatkar was spotted escaping by train from Kamothe railway station. A police team continued tracking his location and apprehended him from his Wadala residence around 10.30 pm. Previously, we was arrested by Wadala police in a house break theft case. While, he stole the bike from Khandeshwar for leisure ride and to conduct reece for committing burglary.”
