COVID-19

situation in Thane city seems to be getting grimmer with each passing day. After reporting over 300 cases for four consecutive days, the city has seen a spike of nearly 500 new cases.

On Wednesday, 493 people tested positive for the virus against 370 on Tuesday, 304 on Monday, 328 on Sunday, and 338 on Saturday. Whereas, 185 people recovered and two people lost their lives. The overall death toll now stands at 1,355.

Though the death rate has been low, with the addition of COVID patients, the active cases have crossed the 3,041 mark for the first time since October 20, 2020. On February 18, the active cases were 998, however, in a month's period, it has seen a spike of over 2,000 cases.

Majiwada-Manpada, Naupada-Kopri, Uthalsar, and Wagale areas have been reporting the maximum number of new cases among the nine prabhag areas.

In fact, for the second time in less than a week, the Majiwada-Manpada area reported over 100 cases with 144 people testing positive on Wednesday.

Vartak Nagar and Naupada-Kopri areas saw a surge of 74 cases each.

Whereas, Wagale area reported 49 cases, followed by 44 in Lokmanya-Savarkar, 42 in Uthalsar and 34 in Kalwa.

Mumbra, which saw zero new cases on Tuesday, reported 16 new cases, while Diva reported 13 cases.

Three new cases were reported from out of Thane's jurisdiction.


The neighbouring Kalyan-Dombivli region also reported this year's highest spike with 593 new cases.

Meanwhile, in the view of rising cases, after imposing a lockdown in 16 hotspots, Thane Municipal Corporation has put fresh restrictions.

The TMC has allowed hotels, cinema halls, restaurants to operate with 50 percent capacity. Whereas, no permission will be granted for social, religious, political gathering, and cultural programs.



For weddings, only 50 people will be allowed, while 20 for funerals.

Thane Municipal Commissioner and Mayor

Naresh Mhaske

have urged people to wear masks, avoid crowding and follow social distancing. The TMC has also warned of action against those who flout the norms.
