MUMBAI: The organisers of Formula 1 racer David Coulthards show on the Bandra-Worli sealink on Sunday may not get back their deposit of Rs 14 lakh from the state government. The reason: Coulthard drove his car at well over 200 kmph, against the prescribed speed limit of 100 kmph. Although the speed demon didnt cause any damage to the sealinks structure, those present, including police chief D Sivanandan who flagged off the car, were left flabbergasted.Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) sources said the ace F1 driver, who started from the Bandra end, reached a top speed of around 265 kmph and virtually touched the other end of the link in a flash.
MSRDC had warned David not to speed in excess of 100 kmph.
Organisers of the raceRed Bullhad paid Rs 35 lakh to MSRDC of which Rs 21 lakh was to compensate for the days toll collection on the sealink while Rs 14 lakh was a deposit in case of an eventuality like an accident or damage to the structure. We respect David for helping put the link on the global map. But he crossed the speed limit and we will have to recover the penalty. We will not return the organisers deposit, said a senior MSRDC official. MSRDC MD Satish Gavai had told TOI that speeding beyond 100 kmph on the links curve could result in a vehicle losing its balance due to the centrifugal force. According to him, the structure is designed to allow speeds only up to 100 km per hour. Presently, motorists are not even allowed to go beyond 50 km. However, gradually, the permissible speed would be increased to 80 kmph.
