KALYAN: In a shocking case of road rage, a teenager stabbed a 54-year-old pathologist to death following an argument in Kalyan on Saturday evening.
The police have booked Jayesh Dongare (18), a college student, for murder based on the statements of three eyewitnesses and are looking for him.
"We visited his home in Rambaug in Kalyan (W), but did not find him there.
We hope to arrest him soon," said inspector Sunil Dhanawade of the Mahatma Phule police station.
The victim,
Mayur Mehta, was a resident of Golden Park-II in Kalyan (west). At 6pm, Mehta, who ran Bhuvan's Pathology Laboratory Centre in Rambaug, was returning home when his scooter allegedly brushed against Dongare's motorcycle while overtaking him near Santosh Mata bridge. ASngry, Dongare overtook Mehta, forced him to stop and started screaming at him, said the police. As the two were arguing, Dongare suddenly whipped out a knife and stabbed Mehta on the legs. He got on his bike and sped away. Three motorcyclists, who witnessed the entire incident and identified Dongare, gave hime a chase, but failed to catch him.
By then Mehta managed to get back on his scooter and rode about 500m further to his friend's medical store, but he collapsed on reaching there. The shop owner, a woman passerby and three others rushed him to the nearby Telavane Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Mehta is survived by his parents, wife and daughter Madhu, who recently cleared her Chartered Accountancy examination.
"This incident is an example of how today's youth does not have patience and humanity; the boy killed a man who was his father's age," said
Ketan Patel, a friend of the Mehtas.
The incident has shocked Mehta's family as well as his neighbours in Golden Park area. The medical fraternity too expressed shock at Mehta's killing as he was one of oldest pathologists in the city.
