Parth Pawar richest of 7 Maha candidates in RS poll fray

Mumbai: Thirty-five-year-old Parth Pawar of the NCP, who was recently embroiled in a controversy related to a Pune land deal, has total assets of Rs 87 crore, making him the richest of the seven candidates fielded by major parties for the Rajya Sabha elections from Maharashtra, according to their election affidavits.

The second richest and the oldest candidate is Sharad Pawar (86) belonging to the rival NCP faction with assets worth Rs 60 crore.

Shiv Sena's Jyoti Waghmare is the lowest among the seven candidates, with total assets of Rs 32 lakh.

Parth, grandnephew of Sharad Pawar, has no criminal cases pending against him, according to the affidavit. Parth's total assets were worth Rs 10.8 crore during the 2019 parliamentary election he unsuccessfully contested.


Sharad Pawar's assets, which stood at Rs 31.7 crore in 2020, increased by around 89% over the last six years. The second oldest candidate is BJP's 72-year-old Ramrao Wadkute with total assets of Rs 5.6 crore.

BJP candidate Maya Ivnate's total declared assets is Rs 3.8 crore, which is almost similar to what she had declared while contesting in the Nagpur civic election a few months ago. BJP leader Vinod Tawde declared assets of Rs 31.8 crore, which was Rs 6.8 crore in 2014, when he successfully contested the assembly election from Borivli.

The seven candidates will mostly win the Rajya Sabha seats according to their parties-alliance strength, though two independent candidates, Sayanna Kante and Umesh Mhetre, also filed nomination forms. The election is scheduled to take place on March 16.

The total assets are calculated after deducting liabilities from the declared assets. In 2019, Parth Pawar's declared assets was Rs 20 crore, and his liabilities was Rs 9.3 crore which was in form of loan he took from his mother, Sunetra Pawar, now deputy chief minister, and his brother Jai Pawar.

For the Rajya Sabha contest, Parth mentioned his declared assets as Rs 88.3 crore and a Rs 92 lakh loan liability. His assets include Rs 2 crore loan he has given, a Rs 2.11 crore bank balance along with Rs 2.5 crore in shares, bonds, etc, and land parcels.
