Mumbai: Nishna Patel, the 16-year-old golf prodigy from Mumbai, is set to go places after being selected to represent India at the prestigious World Amateur Team Championship 2022 to be held in Paris from August 24 to 27.
The Chembur resident, who trains at the Bombay Presidency Golf Club (BPGC), was selected at the trials conducted by the Indian Golf Union (IGU) in Hyderabad last week.

Ranked No. 3 among amateurs in the country, Nishna had topped the table at trials with a score of 10-under over four days. The selection was done on scores of the best four rounds out of five. Avani Prashanth and Smriti Bhargav were the other girls who will be representing India at Paris.
“It’s an honour to be selected to represent the country in such a big tournament,” Nishna told TOI on Tuesday. “I hope to put up my best show,” said the teenager who is the first one to play for the country from the Western India region.
Nishna, a student of St. Gregorios High School who recently appeared for her 10th standard board exams, is firmly keeping her sight on the Paris event but her immediate goal is to put up her best at the 119th Women’s British Amateur championship 2022 to be held at the Hunstanton in Norfolk, England, from June 20 to 25. The IGU selected her to play along with Avani Prashanth and Sneha Singh.
“Yes, am preparing for both the upcoming challenges at BPGC from morning 8 to six in the evening almost every day,” said Nishna.
“My preparation includes a combination of golf practice, physical fitness, diet, and mind training,” added Nishna.
Nishna trains under Laurence Brotheridge, a renowned British coach. “Laurence had come down to India last April and now again I will meet him during the Women’s British Amateur championship. I train online with him. I send him my videos and he guides me about where I need to improve,” Nishna informed.
“Nishna has been working really hard and smart the past few months and the dedication is now starting to come to fruition. Both the events in England and France will be exciting as the conditions and surfaces will need some time to adjust to. Based on her recent run of form, she should keep things the same and not overthink things,” Brotheridge told TOI.
