Akhtar Ali Khan, 54, a Jaunpur-based homeopath, was in Mumbai to look for a match for his daughter. Last Friday, after namaz, he got into a harbour local from Mankhurd to travel to Sandhurst Road. At Reay Road, he came to the door of the compartment to make a phone call. Two men got in just as the train was about to move. They snatched Khan's phone. One of the men got off even as the train started moving. Khan grappled with the other, lost his balance and rolled off the edge of the platform, landing under the tracks. His leg was amputated below the knee in a surgery at JJ Hospital on Sunday.
"Farhan has been convicted twice in theft cases in the past. He was externed by the Byculla police for a period of two years. He started committing crimes since 2014 when he was a juvenile," said senior inspector Rajendra Pal, Wadala GRP.
The police are quizzing Farhan for retrieving Khan's stolen phone. "We had laid a trap at Reay Road all day on Tuesday. Mobin was nabbed first and Farhan was located later," an officer said.
One more person is wanted in the case.
