Ten dead in Maharashtra rain havoc, Mumbaikars begin picking up pieces of life

As Mumbaikars began picking up the pieces of their lives after yesterday's deluge that sank the city and its satellite towns in a sea of misery, at least 10 people were reported dead due to drowning and wall collapse, officials said today.

Nine people were washed away in separate incidents in Mumbai, while two lost their lives due to drowning in adjoining districts of Palghar and Thane. Another man was killed when a wall came crashing down on him in Mumbai's Ghatkopar.

Renowned gastroenterologist of Bombay Hospital Dr Deepak Amrapurkar has gone missing from near the Elphinstone Road station, and eyewitnesses claimed he drowned in a manhole in a flood street, police said.

58-year-old Amarapurkar had left for home last evening by his car but as the road was waterlogged he asked his driver to drop him near the Elphinstone Road station and started walking towards his residence.

450 NDRF personnel mobilised for deployment in Mumbai

Around 450 personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been mobilised for deployment in Mumbai, where normal life has been disrupted due to heavy rains.Three NDRF teams, already pre-positioned in Mumbai, were immediately supplemented by sending more teams, a home ministry statement said.

At 331.4 mm, Mumbai gets heaviest rainfall since 2005 deluge

The Santacruz observatory of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) here registered 331.4 mm rainfall on Tuesday, the heaviest since the July 26, 2005 record of 944 mm, which had caused the worst havoc in decades in the city.

This is also the highest rainfall in a day in August since 1997. It was second only to 346.2 mm of rainfall registered on August 23, 1997, the data showed.

The Colaba observatory of the IMD registered 110 mm of rainfall yesterday, it said.

"The precipitation measured between 8.30 am of August 29 to 8.30 am of August 30 revealed that Santacruz weather station has received 331.4 mm rainfall, while the Colaba observatory received 110 mm during the same period," the IMD said.

The neighbouring Thane city received 247 mm rainfall, while the downpour measured in Palghar was 280 mm, it said.

A day after heavy rains and severe flooding in Mumbai after parts of the city received as much as 300 mm of rainfall, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Ajoy Mehta on Wednesday said that such "unprecedented situation" was much mitigated and are much under control.

Addressing the media, the BMC Commissioner called the rainfall "unprecedented" and added that the water levels are kept "under check" and are reseeding quickly.

He also claimed that as many 30,000 employees of the BMC were present on the streets to help in tackling the situation.

"The quantum of rainfall was extremely high. We had 325 mm of rainfall and there were almost 26 locations where the rainfall exceeded 250mm. So, it was one of the highest unprecedented rainfalls. More than that there are two things we need to see that how fast Mumbai came back to normal which was really unprecedented, it was something that was beyond the infrastructure of Mumbai," he said.

Suburban train service on western line resumes in Mumbai

The Railway Ministry said on twitter that the services on the western railway resumed yesterday at 11.58 pm and stranded passengers were evacuated.

"Suburban lines on @WesternRly are made operational and services running. Services are running between Thane-Karjat, Thane-Titwala on main line. Vashi-Panvel on harbour line, Thane-Vashi on trans-harbour line," it tweeted.

"On direction of MR @sureshpprabhu all efforts are being taken to provide relief to passengers of Mumbai suburban in wake of heavy rains," the ministry tweeted.

"We are working in close coordination with the BMC and disaster management cell to ensure all possible measures. Additional pumps have been put in for bringing water levels down in heavy water-logged areas," it said.

Northern Railways cancels 16 trains for Maharashtra

Cancelled trains include Hazrat Nizamuddin-Mumbai Central August Kranti Rajdhani Express, Mumbai Central-Firozpur Janta Express, Firozpur-Mumbai Central Janta Express, Amritsar-Saharsa Jansadharan Express, Amritsar-Visakhapatnam Hirakund Express.

Besides, Jammu Tawi-Tata Nagar Muri Express, Firozpur-Delhi Sarai Rohilla Intercity Express, Firozpur-Sri Ganganagar Intercity Express, Firozpur-Ludhiana Sutlej Express, Nanded-Amritsar Express, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra-Kamakhya Express, Chandigarh-Ajmer Garibrath Express, Chandigarh-Jaipur Intercity Express, Sirsa-Tilak Bridge-Sirsa Express, Hisar-Jind Passenger, Bandra Terminus-Delhi Sarai Rohilla Express have also been cancelled.

The Northern Railways has also cancelled one train on August 31 and on September 1.

BMC commissioner Ajoy Mehta said following Tuesday's incessant rains in Mumbai, over 28,000 civic workers and officials are involved in cleaning up of beaches and public roads in the city and since morning 5,000 metric tones of garbage have been removed.

Correction: Dr Deepak Amrapurkar, missing after Mumbai rain, has still not been found. TOI's earlier notification about his body having been found in Thane is yet to be confirmed.

Minister appeals stuck Mumbaikars to use his official bungalow

Maharashtra Parliamentary Affairs Minister Girish Bapat has appealed to people stranded in south Mumbai for unavailability of transport following heavy rains, to take shelter in his official residence for time being.

In his appeal made through Facebook, the BJP leader, who hails from Pune, said that people stranded in areas such as Fort, and at Mantralaya can rest or stay in his official residence 'Dnyaneshwari', located at Malabar Hill, till the situation shows improvement.

Actor Govind Namdev, who has been a part of the Indian entertainment industry for over two decades, has gifted food, umbrellas and raincoats to beggars on the Mumbai streets after the city was flooded due to heavy rain.

"My car was stuck in traffic on Tuesday evening. Then I saw the children at the signal, who were suffering with the water around. There were many young girls with kids who were just five-six months old. And their mothers were trying to protect them from rain with clothes and torn umbrellas," Govind said in a statement.

BMC gets down to restoring order in rain-ravaged Mumbai

Situation at Bombay airport is under control, weather conditions at the airport have improved.

As per transport department, 50 percent of the drivers have reported for duty. Cockpit crew are coming by company transport, some cabin crew are coming on their own. Flights are released as per crew reporting. Due to which flights are getting delayed. Maximum delays upto 02 hrs.

There are nil diversions today out of Mumbai of 9W and other airlines.

As informed earlier the total number of flights cancelled is 19 today.

KEM hospital dry and cleaned up

Officials said efforts are being made to remove the marooned rakes on Main and Harbour lines following which suburban services will be restored.

The Central Railway has suspended services on CSMT-Vashi on Harbour line and on CSMT-Kalyan on Main line.

Even as the country's financial capital reeled under the impact of heavy rains, Shiv Sena, which rules the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, today complimented the civic body for ensuring that the situation did not "go out of hand".

Express trains are given halt at Dadar and Thane for the benefit of passengers.

Marooned rakes in between Kurla and Sion on both Main and Harbour lines are being shifted slowly to carsheds. After shifting the, route will be normalised for faster movement, say officials.

Train services affected on Central Main and Harbour lines, delays expected to continue for some time.
