Mumbai rains: Air India passengers of Mumbai-Ahmedabad flight stranded for three hours

Mumbai was Tuesday paralysed by the incessant rain, which left several areas of the financial capital waterlogged and claimed many lives in a wall collapse in a northern suburb. Heavy rains lashing the city since Sunday have thrown rail, air and road traffic out of gear, with several trains and flights being cancelled. Stay tuned to TOI for all the latest updates.

There's no disruption on Western Railway. Trains are running normal between Churchgate and Virar. The water level has come down on all four lines at Nallasopara. Trains are running with some delays.

Amid rains and waterlogging in various parts of Mumbai on Tuesday, many BEST buses faced damages and breakdowns. In all, 58 buses were stuck in the water out of which 42 were removed. A total 152 buses faced breakdown and 132 have been attended to, said BEST chief spokesperson Hanumant Gophane.

In an attempt to help people during heavy rainfall, the BMC’s Twitter handle @mybmc launched its first social media initiatives called "Rain Dost" on Monday. In a tweet, the civic body said: “#RainDost is an initiative to bring together the #HeroesOfMumbai who have always volunteered to help the city in time of crisis. We hope to enable the #RainHosts to help those in need better, by aligning them to concerned wards #MumbaiRainsLive." They added, “Heroes of Mumbai step up every time the city needs them. This monsoon, we’re setting up a ward-wise list of all #RainHosts so that we can help the city better together. All interested, may please tweet & share details at MCGMRainDost@gmail.com to be Mumbai’s #RainDost.” They have got around 300 complaints on Twitter so far.

The city witnessed extremely heavy rains all through Monday night. As per IMD Sant Cruz observatory, the rain recorded over a 24 hour period ending 8.30am today has been 375.2mm which falls in the extremely heavy rain category. It is the second highest rains recorded in a 24 hour period in the last 44 years. The highest rainfall in this period was during the July 26, 2005 deluge of 944mm.
