Mumbai: Maximum City witnesses 2877 new cases, eight deaths

Maharashtra on Wednesday reported this year's highest-ever spike in COVID-19 cases amid rising concerns. The state reported as many as 23,179 new cases of coronavirus in a single day. There are 1,52,760 active cases in the state at present. Mumbai city reported 2,377 new cases, taking the COVID-19 tally to 3,49,974, while eight deaths took the fatality count to 11,551. Meanwhile, in another development, IPS officer Hemant Nagrale took charge as Mumbai police chief after his predecessor Param Bir Singh was transferred to the state Home Guard as announced by the state government in the afternoon. Singh was under flak over the handling of the bomb scare outside industrialist Mukesh Ambani's residence and Mansukh Hiren case.

Kalyan: Stolen batteries of telecom towers recovered, two held
Police have arrested two personsfrom Kalyan in Maharashtra's Thane district and seized from them a dozen batteries of telecom towers that they had allegedly stolen, an official said on Thursday.They were arrested on Tuesday, he said."Some unidentified persons had stolen around 24 batteries of telecom towers installed on a plot at Bhayandarpada in October last year. These batteries were worth around Rs 95,000," senior inspector Kishore Khairnar of Kasarwadavali police station said. (PTI)

Dharavi reports 30 new cases, highest single-day spike in 2021

Dharavi reported a spike in new coronavirus cases with 30 persons testing positive on Thursday. According to the official information shared by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the total number of COVID-19 cases in Dharavi climbed to 4,328. Asia’s largest small scale industry, which had reported zero new cases for two consecutive days in January, is now once again witnessing a surge in coronavirus cases.

Bombay HC asks CAG to probe irregularities in toll collection on Mumbai-Pune Expressway
The Bombay High Court on Thursdaydirected the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) to look into allegations of irregularities in toll collection on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.A bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice G S Kulkarni directed the CAG to audit accounts of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and to submit an affidavit on its findings within two weeks.The bench also directed the Maharashtra government to file an affidavit responding to the allegations, within two weeks. The bench was hearing a public interest litigation filed by four activists alleging misdeclaration of toll and irregularities in awarding of toll contracts for the Mumbai- Pune Expressway. (PTI)
