BHAYANDER: The Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) mayor Narendra Mehta will have to deposit Rs 4.88 lakh into the civic kitty, which he had used to pay for police protection when the assembly election code of conduct was in force.
Mehta, a BJP candidate, was accused of violating the code of conduct by the MNS. According to Arun Kadam, MBMC's corporator from the MNS, Mehta had deposited a cheque of Rs 4,88,286 lakh with the Mira Road police on September 22 towards protection for him between September 2007 and December 2008.
Kadam alleged the money was taken from the civic funds and deposited with the police when the election code of conduct was in force.
