MUMBAI: The medical interns of
Maharashtra have decided to go on an indefinite hunger strike next week for an increase in their monthly stipend.
The interns have been demanding a stipend on a par with the rest of the country, but the state government is yet to reply. Their current stipend—of Rs 2,550 per month—is not enough, they claim.
"A total of 600 interns from all across the state will be fasting from May 2.
We have been trying to arrange a meeting with the government for the last two months. We demand a stipend of at least Rs 13,000 per month," said Vijay Bonde, secretary of the association of state medical interns (ASMI).
