Maratha agitation: Congress and NCP netas call on governor, seek his intervention

MUMBAI: Congress and NCP politicians separately called on governor C Vidyasagar Rao and Backward Class Commission chairman Justice M G Gaikwad to seek

Maratha

reservation.

State Congress president and MP Ashok Chavan sought the intervention of the governor, saying that the CM had failed to resolve the row. “We brought to the governor’s notice that since the CM has failed to provide reservation, it has resulted in a major law and order problem across the state. While six Maratha activists have committed suicides to protest against the failure of the government to provide reservation, a large number of legislators are planning to quit,” Chavan said.

Chavan was accompanied by leader of opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil and former CM Prithviraj Chavan, while the NCP delegation comprised Ajit Pawar, leader of opposition Dhananjay Munde, former speaker Dilip Walse Patil and Chhagan Bhujbal.

“We have been told that the Backward Class Commission will take at least six months to complete the basic work, as a result, there will be further delay in providing reservation,” Chavan said.

NCP too submitted an identical memorandum to the governor and Justice Gaikwad. The NCP delegation asked the governor to direct the CM to provide 16% reservation to the Maratha community without disturbing the existing statutory 52% reservation.
