Major boost for suburban commuters: Western Railway to introduce 15-car train services for the 1st time between Virar-Dahanu

VASAI: In a major boost for suburban commuters, Western Railway is set to introduce 15-car train services for the first time between Virar and Dahanu by upgrading existing 12-car services.

Until now, 15-car services have operated only between Churchgate and Virar, while the Virar–Dahanu section has had only 12-car trains. The move is expected to significantly increase capacity on the busy suburban network and benefit daily commuters travelling across Vasai, Palghar and Dahanu.

A total of 17 train services will be upgraded from 12-car to 15-car formations. Of these, eight services will run on the Virar–Dahanu route, marking the first time that 15-car locals are being introduced on this stretch. The remaining nine services will operate between Churchgate and Virar, further easing congestion on one of Mumbai’s busiest suburban corridors.

The expansion is expected to provide much-needed relief to thousands of commuters who face overcrowding, especially during peak hours on the Virar–Dahanu stretch. The introduction of longer trains will not only increase passenger capacity but also improve overall travel comfort and efficiency.

Officials of Western Railway believe this step will streamline operations and reduce pressure on existing services, particularly in the northern suburban belt. With a rising population and increasing daily ridership in the extended suburbs, the initiative is seen as a timely upgrade to improve connectivity and commuter convenience.

Western Railway has confirmed that these services will be launched sometime in April. Currently, two new 15-car rakes are at the Virar car shed and are undergoing testing and trials.

Speaking to TOI, Palghar MP from the BJP, Hemant Savara, said, "We have been following up with the ministry to introduce the 15-car train services on the Virar–Dahanu stretch. This will reduce overcrowding and at the same time increase capacity."
