MUMBAI: Over a month after an accident on Mumbai-Ahmedabad national highway at Dahanu that killed former Tata Sons chairperson Cyrus Mistry, Palghar district got a dedicated traffic police department.

The 53 police personnel assigned to the department are undergoing traffic management training and will begin work after the gram panchayat elections are over in the coming week.

The highway shot into prominence after the death of Mistry in an accident in Dahanu on September 4. Following meetings with government agencies, the need to have a dedicated traffic department was highlighted.

Till now, cops attached to various police stations whose jurisdiction fall on the highway were looking at traffic issues. As part of measures to reduce accidents on the highway, district superintendent of police Balasaheb Patil had asked National Highway Authority of India to put in place safety measures, including filling potholes and placing boards alerting motorists.

Initially, 32 policemen underwent seven-days training. The next batch is being trained to control traffic and handle accident spots. Traffic cops will be deployed at Palghar, Dahanu, Boisar, Manor, Kasa, Wada and Talasari.
