Maharashtra: Fire at Kalyan dumping ground, locals fume
Kalyan: A major fire broke out at Adharwadi dumping ground in Kalyan on Sunday evening, causing thick smoke to spread across nearby residential areas, leaving residents complaining of breathing discomfort.According to officials, the blaze was reported around 6.30 pm and quickly intensified, spreading across the upper layers of the dumping site. The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) rushed six fire engines to the spot to control the situation. Fire officer Namdev Chaudhary said the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. "The fire has erupted at the topmost section of the dumping ground, making it difficult for firefighting operations," he said. Officials indicated that due to the scale and location of the fire, it may take several hours to fully extinguish the flames. The Adharwadi dumping ground, located close to densely populated areas, has long been a point of contention, with repeated demands from locals to shut it down. Civic authorities have already initiated a scientific closure process for the site, but progress has been gradual.
