IIT-Bombay student who died by 'suicide' was worried about future, father’s health, say kin

MUMBAI: A day after a 21-year-old IIT-Bombay student's suspected death by suicide, Powai police on Thursday recorded the statements of his uncle and two hostel roommates. They said none of them alleged any foul play.

Police said the father of the student, Naman Agrawal, who hailed from Rajasthan's Churu, is unwell and under treatment at a hospital back home, and the uncle was sent to claim the body.

In his statement, the uncle said Agrawal had been worried about his future and his dad's ill health. The roommates said he appeared to have been depressed for some time, adding that he hadn't been feeling well and had visited a doctor about two days prior to his death.



Police said the statements of other friends and hostel authorities were being recorded to ascertain the circumstances that led to the death. They said Agrawal's sisters would be asked to record their statements too.

Agrawal, a second-year civil engineering student, allegedly jumped to his death from the ninth floor of hostel H-3 on the campus in the early hours of Wednesday. A suicide note was recovered, police said.
