AGRA: A 17-year-old former student of a private school in Mainpuri allegedly attacked a 25-year-old woman teacher on the street with a sharp object after she resisted his advances, leaving her with serious facial injuries. The incident took place on Jan 20 around 5.30pm in the Kotwali area of Mainpuri but came to light after a 1.5-minute CCTV video surfaced on Feb 4, triggering widespread outrage.
The footage showed the accused forcibly stopping the woman near a residential neighbourhood, trying to kiss her, and then chasing and dragging her by the neck. When she resists, he appears to attack her face with a blade-like weapon, causing deep injuries to her upper and lower lips.
He fled when bystanders began to gather.
Police registered a case on Feb 1 under BNS sections 74 (assault or criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 118(2) (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons), and 296 (obscene acts in public places). Police said the accused was absconding and teams were conducting raids to trace him.
In the police complaint, the teacher's brother said she had earlier taught at the same school as the accused and had recently resigned due to repeated harassment.
"He began blocking her way, making indecent gestures and demanding physical relations. My sister complained to his mother but the behaviour continued," he said.
After switching to another school in the same city, the brother alleged that the accused continued following her and harassing her on her way to and from work. "He threatened her and started lying in wait outside her school," the complaint said.
On Jan 20, when the woman was on her way to tutor a retired major general's grandson, the accused allegedly ambushed her. "He dragged her into the street, tried to kiss her, and when she resisted, slashed her face. Her lips were cut so severely that she will be permanently disfigured," the brother said. Locals rushed to help as the accused fled, threatening to kill her.
An unidentified person took her to the district hospital, from where she was referred to Saifai Medical College. As no plastic surgeon was available there, the family admitted her to a private hospital in Agra.
Kotwali SHO Fateh Bahadur said the police acted after the family filed a formal complaint. "They prioritised medical treatment initially. Once we received the complaint, a case was registered. We are using CCTV footage for further investigation, and teams have been formed to locate the accused," he said.
