Kaptan Malik loses, 2 family members win in stronghold

Mumbai: Among the wards that political observers keenly watched was 165, as two seasoned corporators —Congress candidate Ashraf Azmi and Ajit Pawar-led NCP's Kaptan Malik, brother of former minister Nawab Malik, battled it out. Malik moved out of Ward 170, which he represented between 2017 and 2022, as it was reserved for women, and contested from Ward 165, while he fielded his daughter-in-law from Ward No. 170. However, Malik was thrown to the third position, and the BJP candidate Rupesh Pawar garnered 7,227 votes, while Malik received 4,863 votes. Ashraf Azmi polled 7,782 votes.However, the election results were bitter and sweet for the Malik family. Two candidates from the family, Bushra Malik and Sayeeda Khan, won from Ward 168 and Ward 170. "The Malik family's influence across the L Ward and in Kurla is widespread," an activist said.
