How to approach women: Dating seminar replies
MUMBAI: Probably even in the Stone Age, males were sidling up to women in the forests, clearing their throats, adjusting their animal-skin-lungis and muttering the prehistoric equivalent of, "Hello. I love you. Would you like to make friendship with me?"
But on the eve of Valentine's Day, in a hip restaurant-cum-bar in Bandra, it was time for an update, with a dating seminar for men organised by a mouthwash company in collaboration with a men's magazine.

Speakers including adman Prahlad Kakkar, actor Gary Richardson, model Bhairavi Goswami, took a two-hour interactive session in which they divulged tips on how to approach the modern woman.
"I'm here to tell men what are the right buttons to push, how to understand that women are evolving every day and that men need to understand their hopes and dreams are changing," said Richardson before the session.
He said his advice would be based not on how to pick up women but how "to approach a woman as a friend".
Was it just a more sophisticated version of "making friendship", as the euphemism goes? No, said Richardson. "Men need to stop seeing women as sex objects."
Kakkar tempered such worthy thoughts with his own advice. "Sometimes women find me hirsute and ugly but they never find me offensive," he said, drawing on his own experience to add that one of the best ways for a man to approach a woman is by "talking his face away".

Brutal honesty is the best policy, he suggested. "You could say, I'm not very attractive but I try hard," offered Kakkar.
While audience members, including several women, came up with questions like "Would you ever talk to an average looking, dumpily dressed woman?" and "How does a guy avoid getting put in the 'friend' box?", Kakkar veered into philosophical mode.
"My experience of teaching people to scuba dive has shown me that the best way to make someone reveal their potential to be attractive is to lead them into the ocean while holding their hand and make them confront their fears," he said.
Maybe pavement Lotharios could try that one: "Hello. I love you. You want to confront my fears with me?"
