Gelatin sticks used for twin blasts: Police

MUMBAI: The two bombs that went off at Gateway of India and at Zaveri Bazar on August 25 were timed for 1 p.m. But the one at Zaveri Bazar exploded at 12.40 p.m. and the one at the Gateway exploded at 1.05 p.m. because of inaccurate electronic timers, according to police commissioner Ranjit Sharma.

He said the cabs used in the terror strike had been hired from Andheri.

Mr Sharma said that 280 sticks of gelatin, weighing 25 kg, were used in each of the bombs planted on August 25. Accused Syed Mohammed Hanif, who was arrested on Sunday, had assembled the bombs at his house.
According to Mr Sharma, Hanif ’s wife Fahmida and Arshat Shafiq Ahmed Ansari, who have also been arrested, had planted the bomb that exploded in a BEST bus at Ghatkopar on July 28. The bomb had 44 gelatin sticks. Mr Sharma said it was not clear whether Hanif had been trained in Pakistan in the use of explosives.
