MUMBAI: In a scene straight out of Bollywood film ‘Special 26’, a

gang

landed up at the

Dahisar

home of a courier company owner and made off with cash and cellphones worth over Rs 80 lakh recently. Dahisar police have arrested 13 people, including the wife of the mastermind, on charges of cheating and forgery. Four

accused

are still on the run.

Police said Kisan Belvate, 59, had sold some farm land in his hometown and kept the sale proceeds at his flat in Dahisar East. In the early hours of June 8, a group of 8 to 10 people, including two women, turned up at Belvate’s home. They produced identity cards of the Income Tax department and told Belvate to produce all the illegal wealth he had.

“The accused ‘seized’ Rs 80 lakh cash and four high-end cellphones worth Rs 1.12 lakh. They asked Belvate to sign some documents and appear at the headquarters later,” said senior inspector Vasant Pingle.

Belvate, who found the ‘raid’ suspicious, lodged a police complaint. Soon, 13 accused, including the mastermind Sameer Topi and his wife, Babita Chauhan, were arrested.

The gang had been tipped off by Belvate’s neighbour

Deepak Shah’s

ex-driver, Ajay Jadhav.
