MUMBAI: Thousands of cricket fans from around the world turned commentators as the World Cup Final unfolded at Wankhede. Ball-by-ball updates flooded social networks with audiences posting messages about everything they saw on TV- and even "live" at the stadium.
It all started with the controversial toss. Curious about the re-toss, many Facebookers logged on to video-sharing sites.
"Guys watch the video on
YouTube," US-based Vinay Shukla posted on his page. "You can hear Sangakara calling tails. He is a cheater." A few others-tongue in cheek-demanded the UDRS (Umpire
Decision Review System) for the toss.
Mahela Jayawardene's top-notch century made him susceptible to jokes from Indian fans. Twitter user Mihir Joshi tweeted, "We're such gentlemen. We're not bothering Jayawardene because our bowlers have been told "Mahilaon ko takleef mat dena."
Referring to
Poonam Pandey's proclamation, someone posted on Facebook: "Ek mahila India ke liye utaarne ko taiyaar, aur ek Mahela puri india ki utaar di."
Indeed, tweets and Facebook posts reflected the various stages in the cricket World Cup final. Slower sections saw lesser tweets while high points saw a flurry of posts.
Soon after Sachin 'God' Tendulkar got out, everyone turned to the 'God' in the audience with one request. "Rajnikanth… do something. Don't just sit there."
And then every time the camera showed a close-up of the star, users tweeted and retweeted, "Rajnikanth has watched India win in his dream last night. Today, he's just watching the highlights!"
Interestingly, as the crowds began chanting Vande Mataram in the stadium, many Indian fans posted about how the electrifying environment gave them goosebumps. And when the Indian run-scoring rate rose, match updates increased with fans lauding the batting of Gambhir, Dhoni and Yuvraaj in equal measure.
"All the politicians in #Wankhede please note, that's what a leader looks like #Dhoni," a tweet said, while another proclaimed: "Captain's knock from Dhoni, right up there with the best from Lloyd, Kapil, Imran and Ponting."
Towards the end, however, chaos broke lose with posts and tweets flooding the Inter-webs. "Respect, respect," was the common refrain as soon as India lifted the Cup, with many Twitterers from across cities describing the revelry.
"Mad scenes in Dubai. Roads blocked. Horns blaring. Fireworks. More India than India tonight," a poster from the city said.
"Bombay's gone crazy. The whole city is on the streets. Dhol, beer, fireworks, dancing, singing. Love this!" a Mumbaikar tweeted. While in the capital: "Every convertible in Delhi is out of the garage."
Indeed, a nation celebrates. And Cyberia bears witness.
