MUMBAI: Two men were arrested on Monday for stealing silver, gold and diamond-studded ornaments worth over Rs 62 lakh from an elderly couple's home. According to the Amboli police, one of the two accused had been employed as a cook at the Andheri (west) flat after their domestic help went on leave in June.
Sanjeev Rai (24) and his cousin Anil Rai (31) burgled the house after Sukhwindersingh Duggal (60) and his wife left for Bangkok on July 11.
"Most of the stolen items were retrieved. Sanjeev was caught in Bihar and Anil in Chandigarh. They have been booked under IPC section 381 (theft by servant)," said an Amboli police officer.
When Duggal came home on July 16, he found the bedroom door open - his wife had locked it before they left. "The wooden cupboard inside was broken, and valuables were missing. I tried to call Sanjeev repeatedly, but he did not respond, which was suspicious," said Duggal. The police collected details about Sanjeev from the building's security supervisor, who had referred him to Duggal.
