Also called as Govinda in Maharashtra and Goa, the festival sees hundreds of Govinda groups participate and compete with one another to reach the pots containing dahi and win cash prizes.

Maharashtra government has notified Dahi Handi as an adventure sport, and consequently the matter of age of the participants is restricted to not below 14 years, as mandated by the Child Labour Act 1986.

Janmashtami this year has a distinct freedom flavour

Janmashtami celebrations this year have a distinct freedom flavour. Both Janmashtami and Independence Day fall on the same day with some Sri Krishna idols attired in colours of the national flag and tri-colour "burfies" distributed as prasad.

More than 150 years old traditional Gokulashtami festival being celebrated at Old Panvel in Navi Mumbai, devotees beaten by rope hunter.

With the Bombay high court relaxing rules regarding participation in Dahi Handis, organisers expect participants to descend in hordes from various parts of the district for festivities on Tuesday.
