MUMBAI: A crane being used to offload construction material at a site in Goregaon (W) toppled and fell on an autorickshaw, injuring a four-year-old boy on Tuesday evening.
The child, Mohammad Rahil Shaikh, was on his way back home from school with three other children when the incident occurred. The crane driver has been detained by the local police for questioning.
The crane was operating since the past three days at the under-construction Mandira Gomati building on Lokmanya road number 6 of Goregaon.
Officials said that the construction had not begun yet. The crane had been offloading material from a dumper.
"Due to heavy rain over the past few days, the ground where the crane was operating had turned muddy. Around 5 pm, the driver had taken the crane inside the compound when it suddenly sunk into the ground. The mast of the crane fell over the compound wall, breaking it,'' an officer said.
At that time, an autorickshaw was passing by. As the mast fell on the auto, the kids inside had a narrow escape. "Shaikh suffered from injuries on his face and back. The other three kids and the auto driver were not hurt. The hood of the auto has been damaged,'' the officer added.
Shaikh was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was treated.
On questioning, the driver of the crane told the police that he had been operating it for the past year-and-a-half. The crane company is based in Mazagaon.
