MUMBAI: A couple were killed after a cement-concrete mixer truck rammed into their bike on Monday night. While the 28-year-old man, Noor Mohammad Qureshi, died on the spot, his wife Heena (25) succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.
The couple was travelling to their Dockyard Road residence from Malwani. The mishap took place at Mahim Causeway around 8 pm.
An autorickshaw driver, Abdul Khan (57), witnessed the accident and registered a complaint with the Bandra police.
According to Khan's statement to the police, Qureshi was riding a red Bajaj Pulsar while Heena was in the pillion. At Mahim Causeway, the driver of the cement-concrete mixer truck rammed into them from behind. Due to the impact of the accident, Noor fell off the bike and was run over by the truck. He hurt his arm and suffered severe abdominal injuries, dying on the spot. Heena sustained back injuries and a leg fracture. Passersby rushed her to the Bhabha hospital at Bandra.
The police said Heena was shocked to learn of her husband's death in the hospital. She gave up fighting for survival and soon succumbed to her injuries.
As the incident had taken place near a traffic police chowky, a motorist immediately summoned a traffic police constable. Meanwhile, other motorists gheraoed the truck driver and handed him over to the Bandra police. "The truck driver Ratan Dulal Sen (25) has been booked on charges of causing death due to rash and negligent driving,'' a police official said.
In a separate accident at Kandivli (W), a 32-year-old pillion rider was crushed to death by a BEST bus on Tuesday afternoon on SV Road. Shrikant Shigvan, a resident of Virar, was on his way to an optics showroom with his friend, Swapnil Jadhav, on a bike. Jadhav tried to overtake the BEST bus, but lost balance on suddenly applying the brakes. Jadhav suffered from multiple fractures and is recuperating in the Bhagwati hospital while Shigvan was crushed under the bus and died.
