After years of wait, BMC poll date out: Voting on Jan 15, results Jan 16; projects rushed as model code kicks in

MUMBAI: The long-delayed poll for the BMC, the richest civic body in the country, will be held on Jan 15 along with elections to 28 other municipal corporations in the state.

The State Election Commission (SEC) announced the date on Monday. The result will be declared on Jan16.

The model code of Conduct has come into force and no announcement can be made which will influence voters in the 29 municipal corporations. Just before the code came into effect, though, a slew of project inaugurations and announcements were made.


Besides local politicians inaugurating civic projects across the city, deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde announced a central park and underground sports complex for Mumbai and a host of projects for Thane.

The BMC, too, awarded two major contracts, worth Rs 1,000 crore and Rs 4,800 crore. The BMC election is the next big poll after the assembly election, which was swept by the BJP-led Mahayuti.
