KALYAN: A 60-year-old man died while attempting to rescue his son from a mob attacking him with iron rods and sticks in Ghariwali village in Dombivli on Tuesday night, police said.
A case has been registered at Manpada police station against 14 accused — Sahil Jadhav, Mayur Patil, Vinod, Nisha Jadhav and her daughter, Jaywanti Jadhav and eight unidentified persons. So far, three women and a 16-year-old minor have been arrested.
According to the FIR, Bama Jadhav was having dinner with his sons Rahul (35) and Dinesh (37), when around 14 people from the neighbourhood gathered outside their residence and demanded that Dinesh come out. As soon as Dinesh stepped out, they attacked him with iron rods and sticks. Hearing the commotion, Bama and Rahul rushed outside to rescue him.
However, the attackers assaulted them too. Bama sustained severe injuries and died on the spot, while an injured Dinesh was rushed to hospital.
Police suspect the attack stemmed from a past dispute, though the exact motive is still under investigation. Assistant commissioner of police, Dombivli division, Suhas Hemade said, "The main accused is among the 10 others on the run. Once the main accused is arrested, the exact reason behind the assault will be known."
On Wednesday, the three arrested women were produced before a Kalyan court which remanded them into police custody till May 1, while the minor was sent to Bhiwandi remand home.
