MUMBAI: At least 107 ‘Govindas’ were injured while building human pyramids during the Janmashtami celebrations on Friday, civic officials said.

The cases were nearly as many as the previous year when 111 individuals were injured on the day of dahi handi, a number that later rose to 222 the following day.

Out of the 107 individuals injured by 9 pm on Thursday, 14 were admitted to various hospitals, 31 received treatment in the outpatient department, and 62 were discharged after receiving medical care.

The injury count may increase as some may become apparent on the next day.

By evening, Parel's KEM Hospital had admitted seven patients, none of whom were in critical condition, according to medical superintendent Dr Mohan Desai.

Among those admitted, one had a head injury, another had a hip fracture, a third had a leg fracture, and a fourth had a collarbone fracture. At least two of these patients will require surgery. A child with a minor wrist fracture was also admitted.

At Rajawadi Hospital, two govindas were admitted with fractures of the hand and leg, said medical superintendent Dr Vidya Thakur.

She concurred that the injuries were fewer this year, probably because the mandals are taking better precautions.

At least three patients landed up at the JJ Hospital, of which a 19-year-old had a blunt trauma to the head and was being evaluated.

Last year, a 20-year-old govinda suffered paralysis of the limbs after having a fall and passed away a few weeks later.
