Bijnor: A 30-year-old woman's attempt to stage a robbery to grab family jewellery in Bijnor's Mandora village was exposed after her inconsistent statements raised suspicion during police questioning.
The incident, which was reported by TOI on Saturday, initially involved Shivani Devi claiming that three burglars posing as beggars had looted her house on Feb 7. However, her version of events began to unravel during the investigation.
Bijnor SP Abhishek Jha said Shivani repeatedly changed her account of the alleged robbery. "She initially claimed that the cupboard was opened with an iron rod and later said a heavy hammer was used. She also gave different timings of the incident during each interaction," he said.
Investigators grew more suspicious when Shivani's relatives, despite being in constant touch with her, said they were unaware of any robbery details.
The probe revealed that Shivani had stolen 14 tolas of gold and 100 grams of silver belonging to her sister-in-law three days earlier, on Feb 4, when the latter was away. To conceal the theft, she allegedly inflicted a knife wound on herself and fabricated the burglary story.
Police recovered the stolen jewellery from Shivani's parental home in Bisaath.
SP Jha said a case was registered against three accused — Shivani of Mandora village, her brother's wife Sanjo Devi, and nephew Golu alias Pankaj Kumar from Bisaath village — under relevant sections of BNS. "All the accused were arrested and sent to jail on Tuesday. The stolen ornaments have been recovered," he said.
