MEERUT: In a major breakthrough,

Saharanpur police

busted a gang allegedly

involved in over 100 robberies

. Three members of the gang were arrested on Friday and during interrogation they revealed that the gang has over 50 members, who know each other only through colourful code names like ‘Mota’, ‘Chota’, ‘Langda’, ‘Batuni’ and ‘Toofani’.

Shahid, one of the accused, had four aliases. He was simultaneously known as ‘Kamal Hassan’, ‘Kabootar’, ‘Nepali’ and ‘Gaddi’. The police recovered 300 grams of gold, 4 kg of silver, country made weapons and a car from the three men.

“This gang has been involved in robberies across the state. The three accused have been identified as Shahid from Kharkhoda, Rashid Qureshi from Budhana and Sonu from Kairana,” said Saharanpur senior superintendent of police (SSP) Manoj Tiwari.

“We are currently contacting

police departments

all over the state to find out where the gang stole all these goods from so that they can be returned to their rightful owners. The group has a very peculiar style of functioning. They all know each other by their code names. Shahid, one of the main members in the gang, has four different aliases. This is so that if one of them is caught, they don’t give away the identities of others. All the three who have been arrested have a reward of Rs 12,000 each on their heads,” Tiwari said.

“We received information that the group was planning to strike in

Saharanpur district

on Friday. We activated our network of informants. Based on a tip-off, we managed to apprehend the accused,” the SSP added.
