Meerut: A case has been registered against four persons, including a man and his mother, for allegedly harassing his wife over dowry and subjecting her to domestic abuse, police said on Tuesday.
The incident came to light after Fatma Naz, 28, a resident of Bakarganj area in Bareilly, lodged a complaint on Monday against her husband Mohd Aslam, his mother Najma and other relatives – all residents of Delhi.
Fatma alleged that since her marriage to Aslam five years ago, she was subjected to constant physical and mental torture by her husband and her in-laws over dowry. She said that three years ago, her newborn daughter died due to a deliberate lack of medical care, as her husband wanted a son. The situation worsened after the couple adopted a daughter two years ago, she stated in her police complaint.
Fatma said her husband and mother-in-law frequently starved them and even attempted to kill the adopted child by strangulation. The ordeal culminated on Jan 6, when she was allegedly beaten and thrown out of her home.
"I did not get any help in Delhi, so I returned to my parents' house in Bareilly and approached the police, who asked me to compromise the matter. I approached senior police officers and an FIR was filed in the women's police station at my request," said Fatma.
SSP Anurag Arya said, "An FIR was filed against four accused, including Aslam and Najma, under BNS sections 85 (cruelty against woman by her husband), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), and relevant sections of the Prohibition of Dowry Act. Investigations are ongoing and action will be taken accordingly."
