The court on Thursday also imposed a fine of Rs 100 on him, failing which he would face a one-month simple term in jail.

Prosecution officer Utesh Johri said that during the trial, four witnesses were presented by the prosecution, and a total of 129 hearings took place before the verdict was delivered on Thursday. Hasan remained in the courtroom until the verdict was announced and left after paying the fine, Johri added.

Hasan was the SP candidate from the Kairana constituency in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. On March 28, that year, he made "objectionable" remarks about Modi, the then Gujarat’s chief minister and a prime ministerial candidate, and Mayawati at the inauguration of his party office in Shamli.

The next day, SI Dixit Tyagi lodged an FIR against Hasan at Shamli Kotwali under IPC section 171 (G) (false statement in connection with an election). The police subsequently filed a chargesheet, leading to a prolonged legal tussle.

Hasan, now serving his third term as an MLA, had lost to BJP's Hukum Singh in 2014. His family has a strong political presence in the region. His mother, Tabassum Hasan, is an ex-MP, and younger sister, Iqra Hasan, is currently the party's MP from Kairana.

The incumbent MLA has had several run-ins with the law. In Nov 2022, the Allahabad High Court granted him bail in a case under the Gangster Act after he spent about 10 months in Chitrakoot Jail.

Despite being incarcerated, he contested and won the 2022 state assembly polls on an SP ticket, defeating BJP’s Mriganka Singh by over 25,000 votes.
