MEERUT: Traffic awareness month, to be celebrated for all of November, kick started on Tuesday with a rally of traffic police personnel. The 8 km rally, which started from Police Lines early in the morning at 7am culminated at Begampul crossing an hour later.
The pan-UP drive is aimed at spreading awareness about traffic rules, bringing down traffic violations and checking the rising number of road mishaps. School kids will hand over roses and lollipops to the road rules violators. The traffic police are also set to observe 'World Remembrance Day' for road accident victims on November 15. The drive will see an active participation from school students, who will make the city residents aware about the road rules.
β€œOn Tuesday, we started the Traffic Awareness Month with a rally. Police personnel carried banners with slogans and raised awareness about traffic rules. The march, which began from Police Lines, culminated at Begampul crossing. It was 8 kms long and lasted an hour, from 7 am to 8 am. On the first day, our focus was only on raising awareness but in the coming days we will also be focusing on issuing challans,” said Kiran Yadav, superintendent of police (traffic).
She added, "The traffic awareness month will see awareness rallies and seminars being organised in the city. While over 4,000 schools kids will be taught the importance of traffic rules in the seminars, some of them-- under the banner of traffic clubs-- will participate actively in making people aware too.”
School kids and NCC cadets have been roped in to make the traffic awareness month a success and to make adults aware about the rules.
"November 15 will also be observed as 'World Remembrance Day' for road accident victims. On this day, all the people who lost their lives in traffic accidents will be remembered and tribute will be paid to them," said Yadav.
Traffic police collected Rs 22.8 lakh as fine from those who flouted rules in October alone. "The traffic police officials will try to cross this fine limit in November," Yadav said.
