Zero tolerance towards flex boards on dividers: Mangaluru DC

Mangaluru: Deputy commissioner and administrator of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) Darshan HV has ordered strict enforcement against the illegal installation of flex boards across the city, particularly on road dividers, citing serious safety concerns.Adopting a zero-tolerance stance, the DC warned that flex boards mounted on road dividers pose a direct threat to motorists, especially two-wheeler riders, as they can fall and cause accidents. "If organisers install flexes on their private property, there is no issue. But placing them on road dividers will not be permitted under any circumstances," he said, adding that even govt events held recently have seen such violations. "There has to be strict implementation of the rules," he stressed.Waste collectionResponding to complaints about irregular garbage collection, Darshan said in semi-urban areas within MCC limits, waste is collected once every two days depending on the volume generated. Dry waste collection is carried out across all 60 wards every Friday.Smart streetlights on the wayIn a push towards smarter urban management, the DC said an integrated automatic streetlight switching system will be introduced once the ongoing LED streetlight project is completed. The system will be integrated with the Command and Control Centre of the Smart City project. "With a single switch, 30 to 40 streetlights can be operated. Currently, linemen must visit each street, which is time-consuming. The new system will allow all streetlights across 60 wards to be managed within 15 to 20 minutes," he said. Initially, the system will function combining manual and automatic operations.Under the project, as many as 65,870 conventional streetlights will be replaced with energy-efficient LED lights. Though the contractor has sought additional time, officials have been instructed to complete the work by the end of June.
