Villagers move to save Ninnikallu Rocks as heritage site

Mangaluru: Villagers took a significant decision to preserve the Ninnikallu Pade, a unique ancient natural rock series spread across 6.3 acres in Padubidri, and develop the place as a global cultural and natural heritage site. The traditional site was preserved through various struggles 15 years ago, but there was no opportunity to elevate it further. According to Ninnikallu villagers, the tranche of rocks is a link to the ancient worship practices of Tulu Nadu. Villagers decided to conduct grassroots-level studies and research to gather accurate information. Senior folklore researcher YN Shetty said that a meeting of the villagers was held in association with the Tuluworld Foundation to develop the Ninnikallu Pade, a unique symbol of the ancient heritage of Tulu Nadu, into a global cultural and natural heritage site. "There was a palace of the erstwhile kingdom of Kunda Heggade in the village. The ancient rock formation has an idol of Kote Bhairava, a deity believed to protect the fort. The area was notified for an industry 15 years ago, and there were plans to destroy the rocks. However, the protests in unison by villagers forced the govt to withdraw the decision to acquire the land," he said. The natural rock series, which attracts tourists, stands approximately 30-40ft high and spans 6.3 acres. At one spot, there is a massive rock where the Kote Bhairava deity is found, he said. "We carried out a campaign recently to protect historic sites in the region. It was decided at a preliminary meeting that the Ninnikallu Pade also needs to be developed and protected. For this, a civic committee will be formed to undertake the next phase of actions for development," said Shetty. Ashok Raja of the Yermal Beedu family said that preserving and developing the ancient worship site of Ninnikallu, a significant spiritual centre in Tulu Nadu, is a duty for every Tuluva.
