Seminar to commemorate birth centenary of Dr Paduru Gururaja Bhat today
Udupi: The Dr Paduru Gururaja Bhat Memorial Trust is organising a symposium on Thursday at Town Hall, to commemorate the birth centenary of the late Dr Paduru Gururaja Bhat, a distinguished historian and scholar known for his pioneering research in Indian temple architecture and iconography. The event will bring together some of the most renowned historians and scholars to discuss and explore the rich cultural and architectural heritage of Indian temples.Prof P Sripati Tantri of the trust said, "The event will feature Padma Shri awardee KK Mohammed, an eminent archaeologist known for his extensive work in the preservation and restoration of historical sites. His session will focus on India's ancient temples, their preservation, and reconstruction efforts, with special emphasis on the rebuilding of 70 temples in Battepura, Jharkhand, originally constructed by the Gurjara-Pratiharas in the 7th-8th century and later destroyed in invasions. Joining him will be Dr Vikram Sampath, a celebrated historian and author, who will speak on the distortions in Indian history and the need to revisit and rewrite historical narratives to bring forth India's true cultural and spiritual legacy. His discussion will highlight the hidden aspects of India's past that were overshadowed or misrepresented over time."Another key speaker, Dr Surendranath Bopparaju, an internationally recognised expert in temple architecture and design, will provide a detailed analysis of ancient Indian craftsmanship, aesthetic brilliance, and scientific knowledge in temple construction. His session will explore the intricate artistry, carvings, and symbolic representations that make Indian temples unique.Prof Tantri said, "This symposium aims to create a meaningful dialogue on the preservation of India's temple heritage, historical truth, and the role of temples in shaping India's cultural identity. The event will serve as a meeting point for historians, scholars, architects, and enthusiasts passionate about India's rich historical past."
