No takers for farmer widow pension scheme in DK
Mangaluru: Several state govt welfare schemes for the poor in Dakshina Kannada district have received little to no response, with only a handful of applications being filed in 2025-26. For instance, the farmer widow pension scheme, which provides Rs 2,000 per month to the wife of a farmer who died by suicide, currently has no beneficiaries in the district, as no such cases have been reported. Similarly, the compensation scheme for acid attack victims has received just one application so far.As per the data available with the TOI, no application was received from Bantwal, Belthangady, Kadaba, Mangaluru, Moodubidire, Mulki, Puttur, Sullia and Ullal taluks for the farmer widow pension scheme. As per the govt circular, widows of farmers are eligible to receive a monthly pension under the scheme, which was rolled out from Nov 13, 2015. This benefit is granted only in case of suicide by a farmer, who was forced to take the extreme step due to the distress related to loan over dues.As per the govt circular, each acid attack victim is eligible to receive Rs 10,000 per month as compensation. The district's data shows that the authorities concerned have received only one application from Kadaba taluk for the scheme benefit.Another scheme that received a thin response is the Maithri scheme, which offers a monthly aid of Rs 1,200 to transgenders of the age group of 25-64 years. The scheme was introduced in Aug 2013. According to officials, the district has received only two applications in Mangaluru taluk, last financial year.Under the Manasvini scheme, the govt initiative launched in 2013 to provide monthly financial assistance to unmarried, divorced, or separated women in rural areas, the district has received 88 applications. Officials said only six applications have been rejected and the scheme benefit of Rs 800 per month is being given to all the remaining beneficiaries in the district. The district has organised 624 pension adalats till March 31. All 8,088 applications related to various govt welfare schemes received during the adalats were resolved, officials said.
