Nethravati in spate; No water supply to Mangaluru

MANAGLURU:

Water supply

to the city, parts of

Ullal

and Bantwal will be

disrupted

as the water level in the

Nethravati river

at

Thumbe

has touched 9 metres on Thursday, leading to submersion of pumps.

The new

dam

at Thumbe in Bantwal taluk, which was commissioned in December 2016, has a maximum storage level of 11 metres. The water level was initially maintained at five metres earlier, and later in January this year, the height of the shutters was increased to six metres. Due to increase in the inflow in the river, the water level has touched 9 metres on Thursday, though all the shutters of the dam remain open.

Officials say the heavy rain that lashed the catchment areas of Nethravati river has led to increase in inflow. Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) council ruling party chief whip M Shashidhar Hegde told TOI that the water supply will be disrupted in the city, as the pump house near the dam at Thumbe was submerged due to the overflowing river. “Mescom authorities have now disconnected the power supply. Water supply has been suspended temporarily. Water supply can be restored only after alternative measures are taken,” Hegde said.
