MANGALURU: The Karnataka government has issued an order approving the renaming of road between Ambedkar Circle to Catholic Club via Light House Hill after Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty, who was associated with the Vijaya Bank since 1946 and later served as its chairman from 1962.
The state government had given its nod to name the road after Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty in its order on May 24, 2017.
However, when the issue of renaming the stretch after the banker was snowballed into controversy due to objections, the government had issued another order on July 1, 2017 to maintain the status quo.
Later, the high court after hearing various petitions directed the state government on April 11, 2019 to take a suitable decision. Following this, the state government on September 5 withdrew its previous order dated July 1, 2017 that stayed the proposal.
Accordingly, the road has been named after Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty, said mayor Diwakar at the council meet of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) on Tuesday.
The mayor added that a programme will be held to declare the road as Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty Road at Light House Hill on Wednesday.
