Mandd Sobhann eyes Guinness record with singing marathon
Mangaluru: Mandd Sobhann, the world's premier Konkani cultural organisation, announced the creation of a Guinness World Record by singing 5,400-plus songs for 12 days, 12 hours, and 12 minutes.Considered as the World Konkani Music Mega Convention, the event is scheduled to be held from Nov 3 to 15 and is expected to bring together Konkani singers from across the globe, and pay tribute to noted Konkani activist Eric Ozario, who passed away a few months ago. If successful, the event could earn a second Guinness World Record for the community.
In 2008, the Konkani cultural organisation had entered the Guinness World Records with the ‘Longest Singing Marathon by Multiple Singers', popularly known as Konkani Nirantari. Held from Jan 26 to 27 at Kalaangann in Shaktinagar, the 40-hour marathon featured 1,711 singers performing 645 Konkani songs in 44 groups.Louis Pinto, president, Mandd Sobhann, said that the new initiative was announced on the day Eric Alexander Ozario, Gurkar of Mandd Sobhann, passed away. "This convention is dedicated to Ozario, whose lifelong efforts greatly elevated the stature of the Konkani language and culture," he said.Singers from coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Goa, and Mumbai, along with participants from Gulf countries, Australia, and other parts of the world, will take part in the record attempt at Kalaangann. The event is estimated to cost Rs 1.8 croreIndividuals aged 16 years or above as of Aug 1, 2026, are eligible to participate. Each team will be allotted one hour, and will be required to perform between 16 and 18 songs within their designated time slot.Teams performing in the Mangalurean Christian dialect will be provided with a curated song list by the organisers, categorised into 18 genres, from which each team must select one song per genre. "Around 300 teams are expected to participate. The event is open to Konkani speakers of all dialects, including Christians, GSBs, Kudmi, Kharvi, Siddi, Daldi, Navayati, RSBs, Daivajna and others from India and abroad," Pinto said.
